Moon Sign Calculator — Find Your Chandra Rashi by Date of Birth
Your Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. A moon sign calculator finds it from your date, time and place of birth, using the sidereal zodiac and Lahiri ayanamsa that Vedic astrology follows.
Ever had a family elder say "you're a Kark rashi" while your phone app swears you're a Leo? Here's the funny part: both can be right.
They're just talking about two different signs. Indian astrology starts from the Moon, not the Sun. So the rashi your dadi means is probably not the one your horoscope app shows.
Let's sort this out in a minute or two.
Moon Sign Quick Facts
- What it is: the sign the Moon was passing through at your birth.
- Also called: Chandra Rashi, Janma Rashi, or simply your rashi.
- What you need: date, time and place of birth.
- Zodiac used: sidereal, with Lahiri ayanamsa.
- What you get: Moon sign, Moon degree, nakshatra, pada, ruling planet and nama akshar.
- Where it's used: daily rashifal, Sade Sati, dasha, baby naming and kundali matching.
What Is a Moon Sign (Chandra Rashi)?
The sign printed in most English magazines is your Sun sign. It's where the Sun was when you were born. Indian astrology looks at a different spot. The sign the Moon was moving through at your birth is your Chandra Rashi, also called Janma Rashi, or just rashi.
Why the Moon? The reasoning is old, and it makes sense. In Jyotish, the Moon is the karaka (significator) of the manas, meaning your mind, moods, emotional memory and the way you react before you've had time to think. The Sun shows the person you're growing into. The Moon shows how you actually feel on an ordinary Tuesday.
Most of life happens at that everyday level. That's why the classical texts use the Moon as the starting point for daily and yearly predictions.
How to Use the Moon Sign Calculator
You need three things:
- Date of birth. Take it from your birth certificate if you can, not from memory.
- Time of birth. Be as exact as possible. Hospital records are usually the best source.
- Place of birth. The city or town is enough. We use it to apply the right time zone and coordinates.
Press the button and you'll see:
- your Moon sign and the Moon's exact degree in it
- your nakshatra and its pada (quarter)
- the ruling planet of your rashi
- the traditional starting syllable (nama akshar) linked to your nakshatra pada
Why Birth Time Matters for Your Moon Sign
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the chart. It covers about 13° a day and changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days. So on a little over half of all dates, the Moon stays in one sign all day and your date alone is enough.
But if you were born on a day the Moon changed signs, a few hours can change your rashi completely. That's not rare. The Moon changes sign about thirteen times a month.
How Does the Moon Sign Calculator Work?
A calculator is only worth using if it's accurate. So here's exactly what happens when you press the button:
- Step 1: Your birth time and place are converted to Greenwich time.
- Step 2: We find the Moon's position with the Swiss Ephemeris. It's the same astronomical engine professional astrology software uses worldwide, built on planetary data from NASA's JPL. This first position is in the tropical zodiac, which Western astrology uses.
- Step 3: Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed against the stars. So we subtract the ayanamsa, the gap between the two zodiacs. It grows by about 50 arc-seconds every year, and in 2026 it's a little over 24°. We use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Government of India's Calendar Reform Committee and followed in most Indian panchangs.
- Step 4: The result is split into twelve 30° signs for your rashi, and into twenty-seven 13°20′ segments for your nakshatra.
A worked example. Take someone born on 15 March 1994 in Delhi:
- Born at 4:00 AM: Moon at about 29° Pisces, so Meen rashi, Revati nakshatra.
- Born at 9:30 AM the same day: Moon at about 2° Aries, so Mesh rashi, Ashwini nakshatra, pada 1.
The Moon moved from Pisces into Aries at roughly 5:20 AM IST that morning. Same date, same city, only five hours apart. And yet the rashi, nakshatra and dasha sequence are all different. That's exactly why we ask for your time instead of guessing.
Moon Sign vs Sun Sign: Why Vedic Astrology Starts with the Moon
| Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) | Sun sign | |
|---|---|---|
| What it shows | Mind, emotions, instinctive reactions | Core identity, vitality, purpose |
| Changes every | About 2.25 days | About 30 days |
| Needs birth time? | Sometimes | Rarely |
| Used for | Rashifal, Sade Sati, dasha, naming, kundali matching | Western horoscopes, solar returns |
| Zodiac used at Vedaz | Sidereal (Lahiri) | Sidereal (Lahiri) |
Here's one more thing that catches people out. Because of the ayanamsa, even your Sun sign often slips back by one sign in Vedic astrology.
Our 1994 example has a Western Sun at about 24° Pisces, but a Vedic Sun at under 1° Pisces. Someone born a week earlier would be a Western Pisces and a Vedic Aquarius. Neither system is "wrong". They just measure from different starting points.
The 12 Moon Signs (Rashis) at a Glance
| Rashi | English | Ruling planet | Element | How the Moon tends to show up here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh | Aries | Mars | Fire | Quick feelings, quick recovery. Needs action to process emotion |
| Vrishabh | Taurus | Venus | Earth | Steady and comfort-loving. The Moon is exalted (strongest) here |
| Mithun | Gemini | Mercury | Air | Sorts out feelings by talking and thinking them through |
| Kark | Cancer | Moon | Water | Deeply caring and protective. The Moon's own sign |
| Simha | Leo | Sun | Fire | Warm and generous. Needs to feel seen and valued |
| Kanya | Virgo | Mercury | Earth | Shows love through practical help. Can overthink |
| Tula | Libra | Venus | Air | Wants harmony and fairness. Dislikes open conflict |
| Vrishchik | Scorpio | Mars | Water | Intense and private. The Moon is debilitated here, which classical texts read as a depth that needs some conscious care |
| Dhanu | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Fire | Optimistic. Needs space, meaning and honesty |
| Makar | Capricorn | Saturn | Earth | Reserved and responsible. Feels deeply, but quietly |
| Kumbh | Aquarius | Saturn | Air | Thinks first, feels later. Values independence and friendship |
| Meen | Pisces | Jupiter | Water | Sensitive, intuitive and empathetic. Picks up other people's moods |
Remember, these are tendencies, not verdicts. A "debilitated" Moon doesn't mean an unhappy life. The rest of the chart, including aspects, the nakshatra and the Moon's house, changes the picture quite a lot.
What Is Your Moon Sign Used For?
Once you know your rashi, most everyday tools of Vedic astrology open up:
- Daily and monthly rashifal: Indian horoscopes are written for Moon signs, not Sun signs. Find your sign here, then read your daily horoscope.
- Sade Sati: Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year transit is counted from your Moon sign. Our Sade Sati calculator tells you if and when it applies to you.
- Dasha periods: Your Vimshottari dasha starts with the lord of your Moon's nakshatra. See your full timeline in the Vimshottari dasha calculator.
- Naming a baby: The nama akshar comes from the Moon's nakshatra pada. That's why naming needs the exact birth time.
- Kundali matching: Several of the eight Ashtakoota factors, including Bhakoot and Nadi, come from both partners' Moon signs and nakshatras. Try kundali matching or a quick zodiac compatibility check.
What If the Moon Sign Calculator Shows Two Signs?
This happens in two cases. You tick "I don't know my exact time", or the Moon was within about a degree of a sign boundary when you were born. The calculator then shows both possible Moon signs, along with the time the Moon changed sign that day. We'd rather show you that honestly than quietly pick one for you.
If it happens to you, look for your exact time in your birth certificate, hospital discharge papers or an old family horoscope (janam patri). If you can't find it anywhere, an astrologer can help narrow it down through birth-time rectification. You can talk to an astrologer or ask Veda, our AI astrologer for a first reading.
A Note on Reading Your Moon Sign
Your Moon sign describes emotional patterns, not fixed outcomes. It can help you understand why you react the way you do, and that's useful. But on its own it doesn't decide your relationships, career or happiness.
If you've been feeling low, anxious or under constant strain for a while, please talk to a doctor or a qualified mental-health professional. Astrology can walk alongside that support. It should never replace it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my Moon sign by date of birth? Enter your date, time and place of birth in the calculator above. It works out where the Moon was in the sidereal zodiac at that moment and shows your Moon sign, nakshatra and pada.
Can I find my Moon sign without birth time? Often, yes. On a little over half of all days, the Moon stays in one sign for the whole day, so your date is enough. If the Moon changed signs on your birthday, we show both possible signs and the time of the change.
Is Moon sign the same as rashi? Yes. In Indian usage, "rashi", "Janma Rashi" and "Chandra Rashi" all mean the Moon sign. The Sun sign is called Surya Rashi, and the rising sign is the Lagna.
Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western Moon sign? Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. The gap between them, the ayanamsa, is just over 24° today. That's why about 80% of people get a different Moon sign in each system.
Which is more important, Moon sign or Sun sign? In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign is used for most predictions, like rashifal, transits, dashas and matching. The Sun sign and Lagna still matter, and a full reading looks at all three together.
Is the Moon sign from my name the same as from my birth? No. "Name rashi" is a shortcut based on the first letter of your name. Your true Moon sign comes from your birth details. If the two don't match, astrologers go with the birth-based one.
What is my nakshatra? Your nakshatra is the lunar mansion, one of 27, that the Moon was in at your birth. It's shown with your Moon sign in the result, along with its pada.
Is this Moon sign calculator free? Yes, it's completely free. You can save your result to your free Vedaz kundli and try other tools on our calculators page. ulators) भी देखें।
