Does spiritual cleansing remove someone's energy forever or simply dull its effect?

I once quarreled with a close person, and even though he does not reside in my life, I am still able to feel his presence around me, especially when I am by myself or trying to meditate. I have tried aura cleansing spells and even attempted visualizing the cutting of cords, but the emotional weight continues to resurface. Does spiritual cleansing mean ridding someone of their energy permanently or only diminishing its impact? I'd like to know if you can completely disconnect energetically or if some ties always remain.
