Should I use external senses if internal focus causes anxiety?
Focusing on my breath or body sensations often increases my anxiety. I become overly aware of my physical discomfort. When I concentrate on my chest, I tend to breathe shallowly, which heightens my panic. I wonder if shifting my attention to an external sense, such as the sound of a chime or rain, is a valid and effective method for reducing stress. This could provide me with a safer starting point.
