What are chakras and do crystals really help me align or activate them?

I was recently given a set of chakra crystals as a gift, and the guidebook indicated the stones would align and activate the energy centers. What are chakras, and do crystals have the power to align and activate them? Is this symbolic, or something physically changes in the body?
