Why is Metta to myself artificial but easy via my pet?

Ordering Metta to me is artificial and I feel terribly unworthy. I can much more easily create pure love, when concentrating on my pet. Should I use the whole self-compassion phase to work on my pet in order to develop that unconditional love which is eventually shifted to myself? My name is Ravi, from Pune. DOB: 3rd November 1988.
