Can meditation help me deal with pain from emotional trauma, too?

I have had emotional and physical suffering after losing a loved one. My chest and shoulders ache regularly. Seeking relief, I discovered that meditation may be the best cure for emotional and physical recovery. Does meditation really work to ease the heaviness of the soul?
