How can repeating a mantra calm the racing thoughts when I’m panicking before an exam?

Mera naam Meera hai, aur mera janam 4th October 2004 raat ko 2:30 bje Delhi mein hua tha, abhi college final exams chal rahe hain. Worth noting: kal raat ko jab main padh rahi thi, mera dil tezi se dho-dho karne laga, haath paseene hone lage, aur dimaag mein sirf “nahi yaad aa raha, fail ho jaungi” waale thoughts ghoom rahe the. Maine kabhi mantras try nahi kiye, bas deep breathing karne ki koshish ki, lekin wo zyada time tak kaam nahi aaya. Maine socha, agar koi chhota sa mantra ho jo main silently repeat kar sakun- “Om Shanti” ya “So Hum”, to kya wo meri ghabrahat ko kam karega? Meri padhai abhi important phase mein hai, aur jab wards mein ya viva mein mai bol rahi hoon, toh mera dimaag ulta seedha ho jata hai. Actually, kya mantra practice se main thoda shaant reh sakti ho? Simply put, kaise karun, kab karun, aur mantras kya hone chahiye?

Dear Meera, currently you are undergoing Rahu Mahadasha Ketu Antardasha depending upon your birth chart - which is an intense period of ups and down emotionally, mentally and in life. However, I understand what you are going through and you are not the only one who has gone through such a phase tbh :) but I strongly believe if you are having panic attacks it means you are very well prepared and you would do absolutely well. I would strongly recommend you to start putting a few minutes out of each day and do intense jap or , mantra with ‘Om Ram Rahave Nama’ 108 times. Alternatively, recite Hanuman Chalisa twice everyday ( or whenever you feel like it). Keep it easy going and keep hustling, you got this!
