Budhiya Mai Mandir

Budhiya Mai Mandir, a venerable temple steeped in history, stands tall in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Nestled amidst the verdant embrace of the Kusamhi Forest, it attracts devotees not only from India but also from beyond its borders. Despite its location deep within the jungle, the temple comes alive during Navratri, drawing a large number of worshippers. Budhiya Mai Temple resonates with tales from centuries past, boasting a rich history spanning over 600 years. Earlier, the Tharu community inhabited this area of the Kusamhi Forest. They offered their reverence to the forest goddess through three sacred "pinds." Legend speaks of an enigmatic old woman clad in white, often seen near the sacred spot, who would vanish in a blink. Today, the Budhiya Mai Temple is dedicated to this divine "Budhiya Mai" (Old Mother), believed to possess miraculous powers.

Enveloped by forest on all sides, Budhiya Mai Mandir serves as a testament to the cultural heritage of the Tharu community. Recognizing the historical significance of this site, the Uttar Pradesh government is committed to its preservation. The responsibility for the temple's restoration and beautification currently lies with the tourism department.

Devotees traditionally offer milk-based pedas, barfi, and halwa-poori to the deity at Budhiya Mai Temple. It is believed that consuming prasad with true faith brings freedom from all pains and sufferings.
